Journal: Joiking

To what extent can our visceral emotions transcend language? Is it possible to "understand" without comprehending the words?

Write a bit about language and emotion - in what ways is language "impoverished" when it comes to expressing emotion? Could music be considered a language? What other things might transcend language, in that we wouldn't need to understand the words being said to understand the intention?

I think emotion and feeling is the universal language. Pain and sorrow is one of the most powerful things in the world. It's amazing how just one's feeling allows a connection to be made between people. When these emotions are put into music, it goes to a whole other level. Listening to a person's songs and chants can make people weak and bring them to tears. To a certain extent, I believe yes it is possible to "understand" without comprehending the words. I feel it is possible to understand the overall meaning or message, but maybe not the specific details. If someone is singing because of a tragic incident then you will be able to feel their pain, if someone is singing because they love someone you will be able to feel the power of their affection, if someone is singing because they are happy you will be able to feel their joy. On top of music, I believe that art transcends language. An artists ability to depict a story to the viewer contains no words, only drawings. In pictures, there are no such thing as different languages.
