Journal: Loneliness in the Modern Age

"Loneliness is the price we have to pay for being born in this modern age, so full of freedom, independence, and our own egotistical selves." (pg 30, Sensei)

Write about your thoughts on this quote...in what ways, for example, does social media in our time perhaps isolate people as much as it connects people? Does it augment our egotism? Are we "together" but "alone"?

I think our generation has been exposed to a great deal of technology that all of our parents have not. While we can oftentimes use this to our advantage I think it also opens a door of extreme self criticism. We now compare ourselves to other people based on our physical features. For some, school may not always be a fun time, it might remind them of how few friends they have and now it follows them back home. When they see posts of groups of friends from school together all over social media, it may remind them of how “lonely” they are. I think now, social media is a competition between people trying to show off their lives and see whose life is “better”. While social media has the ability to connect people from all over the world, it also has the power to drive kids to depression and make them feel alone. Also, I think social media can definitely boosts people’s egos and make them feel like they are better than others. This can be caused because they got a friend request from someone “popular” or famous or maybe they talk to a lot of people. This can possibly lead to the people around them feeling lonely or as if they are worth less.
